About

A little bit about me – Annie Hedley - and my shop.
Me

Floristry is my life and it always has been. As a little girl, I had better dreams when I had a tiny vase of jasmine next to my bed. A regular entrant in the children’s categories of the floral arrangement competitions (influenced by my award-winning mum), I would later arrange my own wedding flowers. And I’ve always kept a pair of clippers in my car so I could forage things that have caught my eye on the side of the road.

I’m a passionate visual artist and a creative free spirit; a Fine Art graduate and a fervent collector of antiques. Looking back, I realise that even a huge proportion of my paintings were botanically focused.

It was almost inevitable then, that I would buy my own florist shop in 2014.

My personal style is organic, natural and wild, though I achieve a level of refinement with the end result through my absolute attention to detail. I’m at once a “big picture” thinker and intensively detail-focused.

“No sameness.” No two of my arrangements are identical. I remain curious to the possibilities of the moment, so that my designs are not staid or formulaic. You won’t find a menu of arrangements in my shop. Every creation is bespoke, based on the person I am arranging for, using the freshest seasonal flowers.

When I am not personally selecting flowers for my shop or an event or arranging, you’ll find me at an auction getting my hands on more antiques. Based in Nottingham Road in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, I’m influenced by the natural uncultivated beauty of the countryside.

My Shop

In the most significant, pivotal moments of the lives of the people we care about, our words are often not enough. It’s a cliché for good reason that flowers have their own language.

Walk in to Petals and you’ll feel a welcoming, vibrant energy. Loveliness is all around you. I curate my shop, hand selecting the freshest available blooms of the best quality, along with fine antiques, unusual pieces and exquisite containers.

I try to include an intriguing, surprising or unusual element in each of my floral arrangements, using unconventional and wild materials, for example, wild grasses or foliage I have foraged.

I pay real attention to the needs and circumstances of each of my customers.

Expect simple extravagance and true value for money.
